Founding History
A challenge born from a clear-eyed view of the problem.
The founding of HiJoJo Partners began with a clear-eyed recognition of a structural problem in Japan's asset management market.
Founder Mentzas Spyridon decided to start his second company the moment he watched footage of SpaceX landing a rocket vertically — humanity's first successful landing and recovery of a rocket once assumed to be disposable. Watching that footage, he felt both awe and an instinctive conviction: this is a company worth investing in. He was not alone; many fellow investors expressed the same desire to invest in SpaceX. But at the time, Japan offered virtually no way to invest in leading global unicorns such as SpaceX. The most compelling companies were in no hurry to go public, and their greatest growth was happening while they remained private — yet Japanese investors had no way to take part in that critical stage.
“Unlock Investment, Transform Markets, Empower Japan”
— in November 2017, financial-market professionals, many with backgrounds at foreign securities firms, came together to found HiJoJo Partners, Inc.
Building a track record, and earning the market's confidence.
Since its founding, HiJoJo has drawn on its proprietary global network and research capabilities to continually form and distribute funds investing in leading global unicorns, including SpaceX. Major Japanese financial institutions, drawn to this mission, joined one after another as shareholders. In 2024, HiJoJo entered a capital and business alliance with Nasdaq Private Market (NPM), the leading U.S. platform for trading unlisted equity, and in 2026 it established a U.S. office, completing a truly global operating structure.
Cumulative fund sales since founding have grown steadily, surpassing JPY 60 billion as of the end of June 2026.
A shifting policy landscape, and the next step: a venture investment corporation.
As HiJoJo continued its growth, Japan's policy environment was shifting significantly as well. In 2022 the government formulated its Five-Year Plan for Startup Development, targeting annual startup investment of JPY 10 trillion by fiscal 2027. The following year, the Plan for Realizing an Asset Management-Led Nation called for upgrading the asset management industry and expanding the flow of capital to startups, and the Tokyo Stock Exchange reformed its Venture Fund Market accordingly. Amid this national shift “from savings to investment,” building out the unlisted-equity market and expanding investment opportunities became one of the key pillars supporting growth capital for Japanese ventures.
This shift in the times moved in step with the direction HiJoJo had pursued since its founding.
“It's worth doing precisely because it's new”
— turning a vision into reality alongside those who believed in it.
Yet launching a new investment corporation meant confronting the gap between conceiving an idea and actually bringing it to life. “There's no precedent” is a familiar refrain — it is not unusual for Japanese financial institutions to approach unfamiliar structures with caution.
Norifumi Akiyama, Co-CEO of HiJoJo, engaged in repeated dialogue with the Financial Services Agency, the Tokyo Stock Exchange, and major financial institutions, persistently explaining the structure's institutional significance and social necessity. His conviction — that something is worth pursuing with full commitment precisely because it is new and socially meaningful — resonated with many institutions and stakeholders, and support gradually broadened.
With the cooperation of the financial institutions and stakeholders who rallied behind the vision, a partnership with JAMP Fund Management Co., Ltd. came together, and on June 1, 2026, HiJoJo Global Unicorn Investment Corporation (HiJoJo PEIT) — Japan's first securities investment corporation able to invest in global unicorns — was established.
Using the venture investment corporation structure, HiJoJo PEIT offers an investment vehicle with characteristics — in legal, tax, liquidity, and disclosure terms — quite different from a conventional fund. With a future listing on the Tokyo Stock Exchange's Venture Fund Market in view, the foundation is now in place to bring access to global unicorns to a far broader range of investors.
The vision HiJoJo has pursued since its founding — democratizing access to startup investment —
has, with the support of favorable policy and a community of like-minded allies, advanced into its next chapter through HiJoJo PEIT.
